alk about Dr A P J Abdul Kalam and what conjures up pretty naturally in the mind is the legendary figure of a personality with medium-built physique, hair symmetrically combed in two equal halves bordering down the temples and face resplendent with angelic, innocuous and innocent smiles, and, at most, the down- to- earth way of life style whom the whole world reveredly called as the “Missile Man”
Talk about Dr A P J Abdul Kalam and what conjures up pretty naturally in the mind is the legendary figure of a personality with medium-built physique, hair symmetrically combed in two equal halves bordering down the temples and face resplendent with angelic, innocuous and innocent smiles, and, at most, the down- to- earth way of life style whom the whole world reveredly called as the “Missile Man” and the “People’s President” of the country.
However, apart from the credit of his historical contributions to the development of space programmes and milestones obtained in this area what makes him stand conspicuous from his predecessors is his undying and indomitable hunger for gaining and sharing knowledge to the students, the very pioneer of the holistic development of the nation.
His utter humbleness and absolute insulation from the paraphernalia of power, privileges and perks of the post and public domain won the hearts of the common masses. Exemplary virtuous qualities like that of empathy and sympathy endeared him to the children, women and men alike.
His very rarely- found generosity to do away with the plan of putting the barbed wires and broken glasses on the fences of the DRDO premises apprehending that it would hurt and harm the lives of the birds, perching upon them, reveals the story of the kindness of the Kalam, the ilk of which is not easily found in the present genres of the personalities who are at the helm of affairs and wield the rule.
Enlightening children and always inspiring the youth to dream and visualise for what they wish to achieve is the rarest of the rare quality which makes Kalam most loving and respectable among the people of all age groups.
Specialised in aeronautical engineering he wanted to become a fighter pilot which he said was his ‘dearest dream’. But he could not realise it as he came at the ninth position while only eight slots were available in the Indian Air Force. So one thing is very clear- he rose to the apex through the way of failure only.
Hailing from a very poor family of a fisherman parents and supplementing them financially by selling newspapers in his hometown of Rameshwaram may simply be the motivating story for millions of urchins, deprived of the essential and basic amenities of life, who so cherishingly and earnestly die to fulfil their desires and rise to the pinnacle of their personal achievements but alas!
Devoid of hypocrisy and hoopla of the halo of a public figure and blessed with unquenchable curiosity of a student, he lived to the last breath of his life, would definitely serve as a beacon light for the generations to come.
