The newly elected President of the Telangana Ophthalmological Society (TOS), Dr M C Mathur stated that there have been several reports of quacks operating in districts and in remote villages in the State. “A committee will be formed to eliminate the same,” he said.

The TOS President was speaking at the second annual conference of TOS that began at Hyderabad International Convention Centre in Hitec City on Friday. “The TOS, which is celebrating its second year since it was formed, will be looking to expand its activities in all the ten districts,” informed Dr Mathur.

Now four districts have functioning chapters. “The idea is to form several committees and hold talks with the government to improve eye care facilities across the State,” he said. Every year about 100 new ophthalmologists are added and TOS aims to provide career guidance said Mathur.

The Society looks to coordinate with private hospitals to hold two-week slots for fresh ophthalmologists to make use of latest equipment as all medical colleges may not have state-of-the-art machines.

Dr A Ravindra Aithiraju, secretary, TOS while presenting the annual report, said that getting the reduction of beds from 50 to 20 for empanelment for Aarogyasri scheme was one of the achievements of the Society as ophthalmologists were losing a lot of patients.

About 650 delegates from Telangana are participating in the conference which will conclude on August 7.
