City-based senior pphthalmologist, Dr Manoj Chandra Mathur was elected as the President of the Telangana Ophthalmological Society (ToS), at the concluded day of the ‘Second Annual conference of ToS’, at HICC. He was elected by the 865-member body and will hold the August post for one year.

Dr Manoj Mathur drafted an agenda with several new initiatives to strengthen the Society during his tenure. Under his stewardship he intends to set up a permanent Secretariat of ToS and will approach the Government to allot two rooms in SD Eye Hospital.

“The Society will set up a Career Guidance Sub-Committee to provide guidance to 100 ophthalmologists graduating every year, conduct CMEs for them, besides seeking the help of top eye hospitals with latest technology and diagnostics to conduct hands on training for the youngsters,” he said after the appointment.

“We will encourage Ophthalmologists to setup centres with high end diagnostics and equipment on cooperative basis in their area for common benefit. A sub-committee will be established to curb quackery in the state. A PR Sub-committee will be formed to be accessible to Media for any clarifications related to Ophthalmology and to ensure misreporting,” he added.

Dr Mathur, who completed his MBBS in 1986 from Osmania Medical College & PG in Ophthalmology in 1990 from SD Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, Hyderabad, specialises in glaucoma, comprehensive ophthalmology and anterior segment surgery. He currently practices at his Clinic Brij-Netralaya and is a Consultant at Swarup Eye centre and Medivision.

He is the recipient of the First prize at Scientific Exhibition of AIOS, twice in the years 1996 at Chandigarh and 2000 at Chennai. He was awarded the “Achievement Award” of the AP Ophthalmological Society during its Silver jubilee session in 2001. He was honoured by Malleswar Rao Oration of APOS in 2013.
