The Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) in association with theIndian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) is organising the ‘Engineers Conclave 2016’ a three day conference at the latter’s campus. The conclave is themed on two critical engineering challenges, faced by the nation in current times, namely ‘Engineering Education 2020’ and ‘Smart Cities’.

Hyderabad: The Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) in association with theIndian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) is organising the ‘Engineers Conclave 2016’ a three day conference at the latter’s campus. The conclave is themed on two critical engineering challenges, faced by the nation in current times, namely ‘Engineering Education 2020’ and ‘Smart Cities’.

Experts, academicians, engineers, policy makers, government officials, non-governmental organisations and industry leaders are part of the event and will be discussing and deliberating on topics related to curriculum and pedagogy; research excellence and innovation; transportation and architecture; urban water management; e-governance / ICT enabling; and energy and ecology, among others.

Welcoming the gathering, Prof Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, IIT Madras and Chairman, Programme Committee EC2016 said, “The Engineers Conclave is an opportunity for academicians, researchers, engineers to come together and provide meaningful solutions to how to make Engineering education more productive for students in the next decade and address the challenges of making smart cities in India.”

Union Minister for Urban Development, Government of India, Venkaiah Naidu was the chief guest of the event and the keynote address was delivered by Vinay Sheel Oberoi, Secretary, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.

Delivering the key note address, Vinay Sheel Oberoi, “Focus should be on learning specialisations and learning outcomes, providing quality education to every student, improving quality of education, focus on research and innovation on campuses, provide good quality online learning to ensure every citizen of India has access to the best quality of education”

Speaking on the occasion, Venkaiah Naidu, “Smart Cities should focus on affordable housing, affordable public transportation, assured power for all. This can be made possible through political will and administrative skill by focusing on energy efficiency, ease of access, transparency, solutions fit for local conditions and people's participation in the process of building smart cities. Engineers play a vital role in the development of smart cities, and hence India should focus on providing high quality engineering education accessible to all students.”
