A public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in the High Court to prevent negligence on part of hospital managements including illegal, unethical medical practices by corporate and private hospitals and nursing homes. It claims that the negligence of doctors and medical staff has hit treatment of patients.

The PIL filed on Tuesday by city-based journalist Narendra Kazipeta of a private news channel expresses concern over frequent incidents by doctors’ negligence resulting in irrevocable damage and in some cases death of patients.

The petition claims that T Sunitha, 40 died on May 29, 2016 allegedly due to doctor’s negligence. The patient first approached Care Hospital, Nampally on December 7, 2010 complaining of severe stomach ache. Consequently, she was admitted and underwent hysterectomy on January 18, 2016.

The samples for biopsy were sent to another hospital, which mentioned that the patient was suffering from first stage cancer but she was not referred to the Oncology department. The doctor continued normal treatment from till March 2014. During these years, the patient as well as relatives were misled, says the petition.

Sunitha was then taken to another hospital where it was diagnosed that she was facing fourth stage cancer and she finally died.

Strong regulations, need of the hour
Narendra opines that corporate hospitals have been fleecing the common man and in 90 per cent of the cases, the patient is not informed what treatment is given and what is done to his/her body.

The PIL urges the authorities to bring in strong regulations to curb negligence on part of doctors. In another incident, a medical surgery performed on a youth to increase height without taking the consent of his parents has taken a toll on the youngster as well as the family.

Some of the corporate hospitals in the city are facing serious charges relating to kidney racket and the Delhi branch of the hospital is under investigation.

Recently, ESL Narasimhan, Governor of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh expressed anguish about the negligent attitude of private hospitals. The Governor slammed corporate hospitals during the inauguration of 30th anniversary of Cancer Care India in the city. He was upset that a patient who didn’t have diabetes was made to take a blood sugar test 28 times before surgery.

An angry Narasimhan had said, “It hurts me to see the manner in which the patients are fleeced and there is no explanation from the doctor or the hospital to the patient. Isn’t it their right to know when diagnostic tests are done? Why are such unnecessary tests being taken up?”
