Gopichand National Literary Award wass instituted in 2007 to honour the best in literature in various languages of India. This year Gopichand Literary Award – 2016 was given to Nabaneeta Dev Sen, renowned novelist, children’s writer and poet, at Potti Sriramulu Telugu University on Thursday.

The event started with an enthralling performance of Bharathanatyam dance recital by Kanaka Durga Nrithya Vibhavari Team. “I was happy to be here. Thank you for giving me this prestigious award. I feel this award as a gift from the writers of Telugu literature. Telugu literature has the habit of producing powerful writers like Molla, Volga and more,” said Nabaneeta Dev Sen on the occasion.

Sharing her opinion about the importance of Children’s literature, she said “Children’s literature is not so strong in Telugu, Tamil and many other languages in India. In most of the cases, children’s literature is not represented well. We should save our own languages and its literature. Bengali writers like Rabindranath Tagore, Sharath Chandra and many others compiled books for children and they always gave importance to their literature.”

“Tripuraneni Gopichand was a great writer. He did hard work for propagating the greatness of Telugu language. He took Telugu literature to the next level. I was disappointed for his works which was not translated into many languages till now. His works should be appreciated all over the country and I think it will happen with translation,” she adds.

“Gopichand wrote many novels like ‘Asamarthuni Jeeva Yatra’, ‘Pandita Parameswara Sastry Veelunama’, ‘Cheekati Gadulu’ and many more. His story ‘Arru Kadigina Yeddu’ being always inspires me. This award is presented from since 30-years. Nabaneeta Dev Sen is a great writer. She wrote many books on children’s literature.
