South Indian actress Anchal Singh inaugurated the eight-day ‘Pochampally Ikat Art Mela’ at YMCA Hall in Narayanaguda on Monday.

“It’s a great place for fashion connoisseurs. The apparel, particularly designer fabrics, silk and cotton sarees are wonderful,” said Anchal after lighting the lamp.

“Platforms such as this are required to reach out to women looking for well-designed handmade cotton, silk wear and exclusive home textile,” she added.

“Handlooms are part of an age old Indian tradition. By promoting that, we support artisans and local community who have been passing on their skills for generations.

Promoting creativity and originality, each design is a result of individual artisan’s creativity which is influenced by the local traditions and cultures,” said the Chairman Devender.

The beauty of IKAT lies in the unpredictability of texture of the fabric, using the latest techniques. “Ikat is a textile technique in which patterns are achieved by tying and dying the yarn prior to weaving, this unique process gives Ikat fabrics their distinct feathered identity,” said director Lava Kumar.

The Mela is on until September 19.
