Nizamabad: Noted psychiatrist Dr B Keshavulu stressed on the need to consume iodised table salt for preserving the health.

Participating in an awareness camp on ‘Iodine deficiency and health hazards’ held under the aegis of the Mano Vignana Vedika at Khalilwada in the town on Friday in connection with the ‘World Iodine Day’, Dr Keshavulu lamented that iodine deficiency claimed the lives of 15 per cent of the population in the country.

Dr Keshavalu said that on an average, each individual should consume 150 mg of iodised salt every day and for pregnant women and lactating mothers, 220 to 290 mg of iodine was required.

Iodine deficiency leads to a rise in abortions and infant mortalities, he added. He warned that iodine deficiency also results in giving birth to physically and mentally disabled children and people would become impotent.
