Warangal Urban: The demolition drive launched by Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) for removal of the encroachments on the nalas (storm water drains) in the city seems to be slowed down.
The GWMC has embarked on removing illegal structures on the nalas during last week of September following inundation in several parts and main roads in the city due to the torrential rains. The adverse impact created by the rains on the city life made the corporation to act urgently in removing the encroachments like it was done in the state capital.
The demolition drive continued rigorously for about a week but late the work related to clearing encroachments that have shrunk the nalas has been given a break. The reason according to the sources in the corporation is pressure on the officials of the civic body.
It is said majority of the encroachments on nalas belong influential persons and they are being guarded by political forces that have been coming into the way of the corporation’s efforts to clear illegal structures.
Besides that, the some of the GWMC officials were also not keen to continue the drive after the Municipal Commissioner Sarfaraz Ahmed has been appointed as the District Collector of Karimnagar district.
The drive launched on September 28 and continued till October 6 during which about 168 illegal structures have been demolished mainly on Waddepally nala and Bondivagu nala. The work was stopped on the pretext of Dasara festival.
After the festival the work resumed only on Monday and nearly 11 structures razed on the nala between Alankar to LB College. It may be noted the Corporation in a preliminary survey identified about 1385 illegal structures on Waddepally nala and Bondivagu nala alone.
The number of encroachments could be more if illegal structures under the full tank level FTL of Bandam Cheruvu, Waddepally tank, Bhadrakali tank, Chinna Waddepally tank, Kota Cheruvu and Ursu Ranga Samudram tank and other nalas are counted.
“If the drive to clear the encroachments is continued at this pace, it would take several months. Pressure from political leaders both ruling and the opposition parties and laxity of some officials are to be blamed,” pointed out the city Congress working president R Srihari.
The city Mayor N Narender however asserted that they would not give in to any pressure and would clear all the encroachments. ‘The Minister for Municipal Administration K Taraka Rama Rao has clearly instructed us to go ahead with demolition drive,’ he added.
Meanwhile, Warangal Urban District Collector K Amrapali has directed the corporation officials to submit a report on the encroachments on the nalas and tanks in the city. Those already identified should be removed with immediate effect, she said.
