Nizamabad: District Collector Dr Yogitha Rana described Sardar Vallabhai Patel as a towering personality who not only participated in the freedom struggle but also played a stellar role in uniting more than 550 princely states into the Indian Union after independence.

Participating in the 142nd birth anniversary celebrations at the Collectorate in the town on Monday, Rana said Sardar Patel, also known as the ‘Iron Man’ served as India’s first Deputy Prime Minister in-charge of Home Affairs provided the much needed strong leadership, immediately after independence to keep the country united.

He was also responsible for the formulating and implementing several social welfare programmes, which were immensely beneficial to the people.The District Collector said that Sardar Patel was a pillar of strength to the first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru as both of them were ardent disciples of Mahatma Gandhi.

When Gandhiji chose Jawaharlal Nehru as the first Prime Minister, Patel extended his whole hearted support to him, she added. She said that after the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru relied heavily on Patel for advice.

Collector Rana said that immediately after independence, there were communal riots in several parts of India and Patel played a crucial role in bringing normalcy again putting the riots down with an iron hand. She said that as chairman of the committee on Fundamental Rights, he saw to it that the Fundamental Rights acquire primacy in the Constitution of India.

The District Collector made the district officials take a pledge on the occasion that they would keep the nation strong and united. Speaking on the occasion, Joint Collector A Ravinder Reddy said that Patel used his intellectual brilliance and persuasive skills to the hilt to make the rulers of the 554 princely States to fall in line and facilitated their merger in the Indian Union.

Patel also played a crucial role in merging Hyderabad State in India through Police Action when the Nizam of Hyderabad refused to join it. He also protected the people of the Telangana region from the atrocities of the razakars.
