​Warangal Urban: National Unity Day (Rashtriya Ekta Diwas) was celebrated here on Monday marking the 141st birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Political parties and government offices have organised programmes to take unity pledge and remember Vallabhbhai Patal in the integration of India post independence. Several leaders have garlanded Patel’s statue at Venkatrama Junction in Warangal on the day.

The city Congress working president Rajanala Srihari, its minority wing leader Md Ayub, BJP city wing leader Ch Sunil, senior leaders Dr T Rajeshwar Rao, M Dharma Rao, M Satyanarayana Reddy, E Raghuna Reddy, Chada Srinivas Reddy and others have offered floral tributes to Patel.

Speaking on the occasion, Congress leader Srihari said being the first home minister and deputy prime minister of India, Vallabhbhai Patel played an important role and made immense efforts to re-establish peace all across the nation after India got independence.

‘Vallabhbhai Patel was a great statesman and a dedicated Congress man. Only Congress party has got a moral right to celebrate his birth anniversary and to observe his death anniversary. Some political parties are trying to claim credit for his contribution in integrating the nation,’ he added.

BJP leaders Rajeshwar Rao and Dharma Rao said that ‘Rashtriya Ekta Diwas’ was meant to reaffirm the strength and resilience of India to live through and defeat threats to its the unity and integrity.

Vallabhbhai Patel as the first union home minister employed both diplomacy and military force to unite entire Indian geographical territory by merging more than 500 princely states to make the nation a federation.

It was because of his efforts Telangana was liberated from the tyrannical rule of erstwhile Nizams of Hyderabad. ‘The youth in the nation should draw inspiration from Patel’s life and make efforts for India’ progress, they added.

The district collectors of Jayashanker Bhupalpalli A Murali and Warangal Rural Prashanth J Patil have administered unity pledge at their respective offices on the day. A similar programme was held at GWMC office where the in-charge Municipal Commissioner Shahid Masood administered the pledge.

The life and services of former prime minister late Indira Gandhi were remembered commemorating her death anniversary here on Monday.

City Congress working president R Srihari, the party leaders Rama Yadagiri, G Raju and others have paid floral tributes to the statue Indira Gandhi at Kashibugga in Warangal. A similar programme was also held at Congress Bhavan in Hanamkonda on the day.
