A team of doctors pulled off a rare and first of its kind keyhole ankle surgery in the city on an 18-year-old woman who was suffering from Osteochondritis Dissecans, also known as OCD, a joint disorder which occurs when a fragment of bone in a joint is separated from the rest because of disruption in blood supply.

Explaining about the surgery, Dr Kishore B Reddy Consultant & Head of Musculoskeletal Oncology at Citizens Specialty Hospital said, “It is rare for people in India to be affected by OCD; it is more common in the West among sportspersons.

The case assumes significance for the use of Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC) procedure to cure the cartilage injury in the ankle.”

Dr Abhilash Kumar S, Consultant Orthopaedicsat Citizens Specialty Hospital said, “The procedure Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC), which was used in this case, holds promise for patients suffering from bone or joint injuries or conditions like osteoarthritis.”

The surgery cost is Rs 1.5 lakh.Upto 60 ml of bone marrow was extracted from the patient’s Iliac Crest (Hip bone) and spun in a centrifuge to concentrate the cells before being injected into the treatment site.

The patient is now out of pain and will recover within a few weeks as the bone marrow transplant regenerates the tissue say doctors.
