Even as the government is leaving no stone unturned to make the Tank Bund area into a popular tourism spot, for many people the Hussainsagar Lake presents itself as a sad destination to commit suicide. This year alone, upto 185 people were saved by the police till date from ending their life.

Moreover, officials reveal that youngsters in the age group of 10-15 years are comparatively more in number found near the Lake attempting suicide.

Speaking to The Hans India, Circle Inspector of Lake Police K Sreedevi shares reasons for a person trying to commit suicide. “It’s when they are going through depression, financials problems, family disputes or problems in school,” she says.

The sad story continues. Sreedevi informs in the recent past the number of people trying to commit suicide has increased, especially in the age group of 25-27 years. “Females who have conflicts with their in-laws or husbands are comparatively more in number,” she informs.

However, in comparison to last year’s 47 deaths, only 26 people have died so far this year. The people saved by the Lake Police are taken to the concerned station or given counselling for their situation.

“There is a team in and around the Lake to keep a watch on the people,” says Sreedevi. City-based psychiatrist Savitha Dathe opines that a person attempts suicide when a person is going through a situation from which they feel no way out. “It’s a cry for help,” she says.

“Every hospital has to take up suicide cases and refer them to a psychologist. When a patient consults a psychologist they have to undergo a detailed therapy to know what the patient is going through,” she adds.

Despite the preventive measures taken by public and private institutions towards preventing the inevitable, deaths by suicide continue to be on the rise in the city and the situation calls for better infrastructure in dealing with the victims.
