Siddipet: Minister for Irrigation T Harish Rao said that art and culture were essential for future generations and they should be preserved.

Inaugurating a State-level training camp for Chindu yakshagna artists at the Neelima Gardens in the town on Wednesday along with MLC Farooque Hussain, he said that Siddipet was a storehouse which gave rise to several art forms and cultures like folk art and assured the people that the Chief Minister would take all necessary steps to preserve the art forms for posterity.

The Irrigation Minister said that it was a matter of great pride that the Chindu Yakshagana training camp was being inaugurated in five languages Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada.

He said that several eminent painters like the late Kapu Rajaiah and Bathik Balaiah, poet Vemuganti Narasimhacharyulu and Perini dancer Ramesh hailed from Siddipet district.

He said that it was important to protect and preserve the literature, traditions and culture of the Telangana region which were neglected by the previous governments in the undivided State of Andhra Pradesh. There was a danger of the ancient Telangana art forms becoming extinct, he warned.

Minister Harish Rao lauded efforts of the artistes from the Telangana region who played a crucial role in the Telangana Statehood movement and also in the earlier armed struggle during the 1940s.

He stressed on the need for maintaining unity among artistes and added that they should overcome their differences. He said that Telangana could attain statehood only due to the sacrifices made by the artistes.

It was the culmination of their efforts and now, artistes should play a key role in rebuilding and developing Telangana, he added.

The Irrigation Minister said that the artistes must cooperate with the State government in enlightening the people about the various social welfare and developmental programmes taken up by the government.

Artistes could take the message to the people more effectively, he added. He assured that he would take up the problems of the Chindu Yakshagana artists with the Chief Minister and ensure that they get proper recognition in the State.

Municipal Chairman K Rajanarusu, vice-chairman Akbar Patel, municipal councilors and others were present.
