Mancherial: The staff of local municipality, which has received the best civic body award from Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, has been neglecting their sanitation work, thus playing havoc with the lives of the residents. As a result, garbage dumps are seen everywhere in the town.

Although the government had allotted two acres of land at Andalamma Colony in MCC area for setting up a garbage dump, people continue to live there.

Municipal Commissioner Tejavath Venkanna said that since the residents were blocking the civic staff from entering into the area, the municipality had submitted fresh proposals on the dumping area to the government.

After 21 acres in survey numbers 156, 157 and 158 were allotted to the civic body, the villagers filed a writ petition in the AP High Court objecting dumping of garbage at the site, as it would create health problems. The court issued a stay ruling in favour of the villagers.

With no alternative, the civic staff has been dumping garbage in Rallavagu, College Road and areas near the Hightec city, raising a stink and posing health problems to local residents.

A resident Mohan told The Hans India in anguish that people and cattle were dying of ailments, after the civic staff started indiscriminate dumping of garbage in water bodies and other areas.

He and Congress party floor leader in the municipality Srinivas alleged that several real estate traders had occupied lands and streams.

This forced the civic staff to dump garbage in water bodies and dispose it by burning, thus posing serious health problems to people.

Srinivas said lack of a permanent garbage dump yard was causing severe hardship to residents of the town, following the creation of the new district.

Local residents have appealed to the new District Collector R V Karnan to devote special attention on the garbage dump at the earliest, so as to prevent and check more people from getting afflicted with various ailments.
