Adilabad: Temperatures have touched a new low of 3 Degrees C in towns like Adliabad, Mancheryal, Nirmal and Asifabad district in the Telangana State as this region is gripped by a cold wave.

The cold waves causing immense hardships to the tribal inmates of the social welfare residential hostels and unable to cope with the cold weather, they are shivering.

While some of the students do not have woolen blankets to protect them, some f the rooms of the hostels do not have doors as the cold winds keep blowing into the rooms. There are as many as 123 hostels without proper basic amenities and facilities. Some of them lack ventilators.

Speaking to The Hans India here on Thursday, one of the inmates of a hostel in Kagaznagar, Ashok, said that they had to spent the entire night shivering in the cold due to lack of sleep.

Although the staff of the hostels supplied them rugs and carpets to every student in the month of June, they were already torn up. They demanded another set of rugs and carpets to withstand the cold conditions. Some students got rugs from their houses.

Another inmate of the hostel Mahesh said that they were forced to take cold water bath and many of them fell sick. Most of them were suffering from fever, influenza and common cold.

Although the hostel authorities set up solar water heaters in the 123 hostels by spending lakhs for Rupees, they are not in working condition. Only water heaters in five hostels were in good working condition, he added. Students dread to take bath in the cold weather, he lamented.

However, when contacted, the Tribal Welfare Officer Bhaskar, told The Hans India that the State government has released funds for the hostels for making special arrangements during winter. He said that Rs 3 lakh were sanctioned for repairing windows, creating ventilators and other repair works in the hostels and theyn would be taken up soon.

Social Welfare Officer Kishan Yadav said that Rs 10,000 were being sanctioned to the authorities of every hostel every year for the repair works. On the other hand, the students say that though lakhs of Rupees were being spent, the conditions in the hostel remain unchanged.

The parents of the hosteliers urged the government to take steps and provide hot water to them, especially during winter. They hoped that the government would come to the rescue of the hostel inmates.
