Kamareddy: Minister for Agriculture and Cooperatives Pocharam Srinivas Reddy claimed here on Monday the yatra being organised by the Telugu Desam Party was ‘politically motivated’.

Speaking to the media, Reddy ridiculed the yatra and told the TDP to explain to the people as to why it could not prevent the suicides of farmers during its 17 years of rule despite implementing several welfare schemes, providing regular power supply and irrigation facilities.

“It should also admit that what Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has been able to do to develop the State so far it could not achieve during the 17-year rule. If this is done by the TDP leaders, people will forgive them”, he pointed out.

He said that the TDP leaders were never interested in the welfare of the farmers and were just shedding crocodile tears now,

The Minister called upon the TDP to first implement the farm loan waiver scheme in Andhra Pradesh, where it is now in power, and then take up the yatra in the Telangana State .

He claimed that during the TDP regime from 1995 to 2003, as many as 10,232 farmers had committed suicide. During the period from 2004 to 2014, there were 12,050 suicides.

On the other hand, during the TRS rule, such suicide cases came down drastically, he added. Reddy also claimed that while the farm loan waiver in Telangana was 75 per cent, it worked out to only 45 per cent in Andhra Pradesh.
