Nizamabad: Thousands of people were who found waiting at various ATM centres and banks in the town on Wednesday had to return empty handed, as they would remain closed for two days.

There was despair writ large on their faces. The decision to ban the Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes suddenly took them off- guard and they had problems in purchasing essential items.

Customers at petrol bunks faced problems as their offer of high currency notes were being rejected, particularly in Nizamabad and Kamareddy districts.

Though they entered into heated discussions with the petrol bunk owners, the owners did not relent. The two districts witnessed hectic activities.

The realtors and those who were supposed to perform major functions like marriages, house arming ceremonies, birthday parties faced immense faced hardship during the entire day, in view of the tight financial situation.

With the spat and the petrol bunk owners becoming ugly, police had to intervene and bring the situation under control. Police security was beefed up at the bunks to prevent any untoward incident.

With shops refusing to accept Rs.500 and Rs.1,000 currency notes, customers belonging to middle classes were seen grumbling in frustration.

People here feel that although the Centre’s decision to do away with Rs.500/Rs.1,000 currency notes was wise, they expressed the view that more time should have been given to exchange the notes.

Even the transport services were badly hit in several places in the town as people did not have the money for traveling purposes.

On Wednesday TSRTC bus passengers who offered the big currency notes were not allowed to travel. Eight persons travelling from Bichkunda to Pandaripur were forced to get off the RTC buses, as they only had Rs 500 notes. They faced problems in reaching destinations.
