The Urdu Mela, a literary festival got good response from students and Urdu lovers. Tahreek Urdu Telangana (TUT) has organised the Mela, marking the birth anniversary of famous Urdu poet Muhammad Iqbad (writer of Sare Jahan Se Accha.. song) at Ruby Function Hall in Jagtial on Wednesday.

Jagtial Municipal Chairperson T Vijaya Lakshmi inaugurated the literary festival in the presence of TUT founder-president Khan Zia and Muslim Community president Riyaz Uddin. Students from across the district displayed their exhibits highlighting various aspects of Urdu culture and literature.

Paintings and photographs of classical Urdu poets like Iqbal, Galib and their literary works and Urdu calligraphy, old and new Urdu magazines, newspapers, coins with Urdu carvings, traditional costumes etc were displayed by the students.

The mock mushaira (poetry session) of Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah court presented by students drew massive response from the audience. Poets and students read out Urdu couplets. Municipal Chairperson Vijaya Lakshmi distributed prizes to the winners of literary competitions under various categories.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chairperson, Vijaya Lakshmi, said Urdu played a vital role during the independence struggle and unified the people of the country against the British rule. TUT president Khan Zia and others also spoke.
