Following the directions of the High Court, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) seized as many as 106 shops, which had encroached footpaths across the Old City, on Thursday.

The corporation officials said that the shopkeepers violating the norms had encroached about 3km footpath from Osmania General Hospital to Begum Bazar.

Speaking to The Hans India Deputy Commissioner N Yadigiri Rao said that the High Court earlier this year had directed the civic body to conduct survey on footpath encroachments and submit the report with photographs.

He said that out of 158 shops in the 3 km stretch the corporation had identified about 110 footpath encroachments and submitted the same to HC in September. The HC after examining the reports asked the civic body to seize the shops immediately.

The Deputy Commissioner said that the Corporation would seize another eight to 10 shops later. He said that the HC during June last year has asked GHMC to remove all footpath encroachments in the area but with shopkeepers submitting undertaking affidavit delayed the process.

However, Rao said that the Corporation has been facing the ire of traders and pressure from leaders of all political parties. He also said that GHMC would continue the footpath encroachment drive in circle 5 (Charminar).
