About 25,000 outsourced workers of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) cry foul over the Centre’s demonetisation decision, as they could not withdraw their salary due to severe cash crunch at banks across the city.

Even as the State government announced to give them Rs 10,000 in low denomination in liquid cash from their accounts, employees claim that banks in the city are providing only Rs 2,000 per head.

What’s more? The salaried class has to suffer the pain of standing in long queues for at least three hours before they receive this meagre amount.

The Corporation workers said that the situation has turned from bad to worse. They claim that while several banks are giving Rs 10,000 for GHMC officials, the workers are receiving only one-fifth of that.

“Ever since the decision was made on November 8, we managed to clear electricity, water and cable bills.

We managed to purchase groceries for the month. But for the current month, we got such a low amount. How can we manage expenses?” questioned the workers.

K Shyam, a sanitation worker working in circle 8 said was in tears. “I had to the pay second term school fees of my children by December 1.

If I fail to do so, the management has warned that they would remove my children’s names from rolls,” he wailed.

Shyam said that the while the amount to be paid in school was Rs 4,000 he managed to withdraw only Rs 2,000 on Friday due to cash crunch.

B Hemalatha, outsourced employee accused that the bank staff in GHMC Head Office building has been supplying cash to all senior officials but not to the workers.

She said that the bank has provided Rs 10,000 in morning session but as the day progressed they reduced it to give Rs 2,000 to Rs 5,000 claiming that they do not have enough cash.

"How can we clear all bills in Rs 2,000? We pay monthly bills to milkman and purchase groceries," she said.

However, bankers claim that due insufficient cash at banks they were not in a position to give away the desired amounts to customers.

On the flip side, GHMC sources said that ATM cards of sanitation workers were with sanitary field assistants and supervisors.
