Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, WHO Regional Director for South East Asia, formally inaugurated L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI)’s ‘Institute for Vision Rehabilitation’ in the city on Tuesday.

Members of LVPEI that included Dr GN Rao, Founder-Chairman; Dr TP Das, Vice-Chairman; Dr Chandrasekhar, Vice-Chairman and Beula Christy, Head, Centre for Rehabilitation were present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion Dr Singh said, “This new centre is an added glory.

WHO has always emphasised on comprehensive healthcare, however institutions mostly focus on preventive, promotive and curative procedures, and care becomes comprehensive only when rehabilitation gets the same attention.”

“This is the first centre in the world which has inculcated rehabilitation and all aspects of care under one roof,” she said.

Dr Rao said, “This centre will provide treatment and also training and education to professionals from all over the world and undertake research on rehabilitation.

We will make this into a global resource centre. Since we may not be in a position reach our treatment to all needy patients, we will train professionals from across the world to replicate care.”

Dr Khetrapal Singh is here in connection with the ‘Regional Expert Group Consultation - Accelerating Actions for Prevention of Blindness’ meetings of the WHO from December 13-15 that is hosted by LVPEI.
