Sitar queen Anoushka Shankar, daughter of legendary musician Pandit Ravi Shankar delivered a soul-stirring concert at Shilpakala Vedika on Sunday.

The venue was bustling with crowd an hour before the concert, and they were not disappointed.

The Grammy nominated artist, Anoushka was on India tour as part of her ‘Land of Gold’ concert series.

Her tour started on December 6 and her performance in Hyderabad marked an end to her India tour.

Performing compositions from her album ‘Land of Gold’ in a packed auditorium, she started the programme with a piece that had musical notes based on the Vedic philosophy of ancient India.

Subsequently, she went on to play ‘Crossing the Rubicon’, and it’s about the crossing of rivers by refugees, who in the recent past are at the receiving end in their place of living and their region of refuge.

This crisis brought about by the unfortunate incidents affecting innocent human beings including infants has had a major influence on the music, which was co-written by Manu Delago from Austria.

Tom Farmer on the keyboard; Manu Delago on percussions and Sanjeev Shankar on Shehnai supported Anoushka very well in the show and the mélange of their instruments with Anoushka’s sitar was mesmerising.

Tom Farmer on the keyboard and Manu Delago on different percussion instruments rendered beautiful solo pieces evoking appreciation from the audience.

Speaking about Hyderabad in the performance, Anoushka shares, “Hyderabad holds a special place in my heart.

I was seven when I first came here for my parents' wedding and since then I have very beautiful and fond memories of the city.”

The show progressed with track ‘Thunderbolt’ and one could see the crescendo building up with electronic tracks in the background supporting the notes of Indian ragas.

Anoushka spoke about the need to build bridges and expressed the hope for peace in spite of the troubled times, the world over.

She concluded with a lullaby titled ‘Say Your Prayers’, which calmed the entire hall into silence and the audience gave a standing ovation to artistes after the performance.
