Peddapalli: Even though social networking sites keep people connected and have many great uses, they have become breeding grounds for cyber-bullying, mundane and unscrupulous posts of late.

Notwithstanding this, a group of youngsters formed a WhatsApp group christened as ‘Peddapalli Blood Donors’, and has been showing the way that what technology can do wonders if utilised properly.

It all started a few months ago when a friend of Modumpally Sathish, techie in search of job, and Arun Gunda, a newspaper agent, of Peddapalli, was in need of blood as he was to undergo a surgery in Hyderabad.

They had no clue where to go and whom to approach for blood. But to their surprise, a non-government organisation came forward and provided required units of blood free of cost, thus saving their friend.

Against this anxious backdrop, Sathish and Arun Gunda decided to help the needy by starting a WhatsApp group providing a platform to those willing to donate the blood.

They sought the help of their friends Choppari Sampath and K Srikanth to prepare a database of potential donors in the region.

Now their WhatsApp group has 220 members. Of which, 186 members are ever-ready to donate blood if required. In all, the number of donations to date is 70 by the group members.

To run their mission effectively, the members elected Sampath as their honorary president while Sathish and Arun are the president and vice-presidents of the blood donors group.

Speaking to The Hans India, Arun said: “Those in need can get blood free of cost either by calling or by sending a message to our WhatsApp group number (89786 96169).

Dr D Poornachander, who runs a private hospital in Peddapalli, said: “It’s a good initiative and the members are doing a good job especially to those needy who have no idea where to get blood and whom to approach in emergencies.”
