Ensuring a healthy life for prematurely born twins

Efforts by Neonatology team at MaxCure Suyosha Woman & Child Hospital consisting of Dr Vinay Kulkarni and Dr Amit Tolani led to the survival of premature twins who were born at 25 weeks of gestation.

"These two-day old twin babies were brought to MaxCure Suyosha; they weighted 590gm and 545gm and required ventilator support for more than a month.

They had a lot of extreme prematurity related issues like infection, bleeding and breathing problems.

The course in the initial four weeks was never smooth and our neonatology team had many sleepless nights,” informed Dr Sivaranjani, HOD, Paediatrics.
“Our team served the babies and now they weigh 1kg each and are completely healthy," she said.

“The team's focus from the very beginning was not only to save the life of the babies, but to ensure they have no long term health issues like damage in brain and eye, hearing loss and lung damage which happens with only 23 per cent of such extremely low birth weight and extreme preterm babies in the best Neonatal centres in the world.

Positive thought, certain daring decisions, good nursing & dedication have made this happen," added the doctor.
