Khammam: State Secretary of the Progressive Organisation of Women (POW) Aruna stated that there was no freedom for women in the country and they were being treated as second class citizens. Speaking at the organisation’s a general body meeting here at Ram Narsaiah Vignana Kendram in Khammam on Thursday, Aruna said women in the country need freedom to elevate their lives financially, socially, morally and politically. However, they were treated as second class citizens without freedom and financial support, she opined.

“According to a recent survey, it would take another 170 years for the women to represent every sector in the world,” she said, adding that many were suffering from anemia (less blood) in our country. “Nearly, one-and-a-half crore infants are dying every year due to malnutrition of mothers in our country. In Telangana alone, around 10 lakh infants died during this year,” she added. She urged the women to fight for their rights and grow on par with men.

State leader of the (CPI-ML) New Democracy Rayala Chandrashekar opined that the Women and Child Welfare Department was of no use to women and children. Due to negligence of medical and health officials, many women and children were dying in the State, he said.

“The government is not implementing the interest free loans to DWCRA groups. Around Rs 31 crore are pending till date which must be sanctioned to women in the Khammam district alone,” he said.Due to the presence of wine shops along roads and highways, many accidents were taking place. As per the orders issued by the Supreme Court, the liquor shops are not allowed within two kilometers of range from the road. POW district secretary C H Shiromani, Kalpana, Padma, Durga, Janaki, Shirisha, Shiva Lakshmi, Sarojini, Munnissa Begum, Venkata Narsamma and Kavitha were present along with others.
