Crime rate comes down with police reforms

Kamareddy: As the State government introduced several reforms in the police department, there are reports that the crime rate has declined. With the installation of closed circuit television cameras (CCTV) and the increase in the inspections at the field level and check-posts, burglaries have come down drastically when compared to those of last year. Lost properties have also been recovered. Crimes against women were reduced after the setting up of ‘SHE’ teams.
However, all these reforms did not make any significant impact on road accidents which continue to be on the rise. In the year 2016, 159 people were killed in road mishaps. Recently, a major accident took place at the bypass road of NH44 near Tekrial village of Kamareddy mandal which in which five persons, including three teenagers were killed was quite heart rending. The driver tried to overtake a lorry near the junction but failed and rammed his vehicle against it. But when wearing of helmets was made compulsory, fatal accidents among those driving two-wheelers have come down.
The law enforcing agencies strictly implemented the Motor Vehicles Act this year as heavy penalties were imposed for violating traffic rules against those driving without helmets and indulging in drunken driving. They also held counseling sessions for the traffic rule violators.
The State government on the initiative of the Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao has introduced police reforms to endear themselves to the people through friendly policing. People need not fear coming to the police station and lodge complaints.
The number of police stations was increased and efficient police officers were selected. Besides, several new modernised vehicles were purchased. Moreover, on receiving information, the police are reaching the spot without wasting much time.
Compared to the year 2014, there was a reduction of 91 IPC cases during this year. While 334 people committed suicide in the year 2014, it rose to 349 in 2015 but fell to 225 this year. As many as 1390 cases were booked relating to matka and gambling. This year, the accused were convicted in 14.39 per cent of the cases when compared to 13.25 per cent last year in 2015. Under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Atrocities Act, 20 cases were registered in 2016, when compared to that of 22 in 2015 and 16 in 2014.
In the newly formed Kamareddy district, there are 23 police stations and three police sub-divisional offices and six circles. The total number of policemen serving the people in the district was 1,078Speaking to The Hans India here on Friday, Superintendent of Police N Sweta said that people-friendly police techniques were being implemented to elicit the cooperation of the general public in bringing down crimes. She expressed happiness over the fall in the crime rate in the district this year.
