Extending his support to the contract lecturers strike here on Tuesday, the District Secretary of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) Ponnam Venkateshwarlu said that the contract system is the modern way of slavery, where minimum amount of salary is given for full fledged services. It is in a way looting the innocent unemployed educated youth.

The Supreme Court had already given orders to pay equal salary for equal work but the government is ignoring the orders of the Supreme Court and behaving obstinately in regularising the contract lecturers, he alleged.

Many contract lecturers are living in miserable conditions, are unable to fulfil their minimum daily requirements and are facing severe problems, he added.
