There are close to 50,000 artefacts at the museum out of which about only 15,000 are on display in the 38 galleries.

In this regard, the European sculpture gallery in the western block would be shifted to the second floor and work is underway in renovating minor arts of South India gallery that has wood carvings. Speaking to The Hans India, Salar Jung Museum director A Nagender Reddy said that the plan to shift the European gallery was taken for security reasons and also to hold more exhibitions in the western block.

The sizable number of marble sculptures at the European gallery is popular among visitors.

Most of the sculptures are inspired from Greek mythology done by famous artistes.

Cleopatra by Prof Borione, Bebe by French sculptor and Psyche, wife of Cupid are a few sculptures that are the prized treasures at the museum.

In all about 120 pieces would be shifted to the second floor in the next couple of months and placed in a more spacious environment.

Part of the plans also includes having more lockers. “We will begin with about 600 units,” says Nagender.

There will also be two shops that sell Telangana handicrafts.

“A tourist need not go elsewhere to buy handicrafts of the region and a restaurant that provides authentic Hyderabad cuisine is also high on the agenda,” shares the director.
