Cops to promote handlooms

Warangal: As the State government’s ‘wear handloom’ campaign gathers steam, the Warangal Police Commissionerate too resolved to lend its support to the cause. Commissioner of Police G Sudheer Babu has on Wednesday directed his forces to go for handloom products. The move comes in the wake of the government’s campaign to promote handlooms thereby bringing back its past glory.“Notwithstanding the fact that role of handloom industry in the country’s economy is significant, the weaving community is living in deplorable conditions,” he said.

The fact is that handlooms flourished in the country and attained peak of excellence in weaving, he said, pointing to the historic evidence of Marco Polo’s, an Italian merchant traveller of 13th century, visit to the country.He said that all the police stations in the Commissionerate henceforth use handloom clothes to the possible extent. He also exhorted police personnel to contribute their mite to the handlooms which is considered as sunset industry of late.Speaking to The Hans India, he said that a TESCO stall will be set up at tee Police Consumer Store for the benefit of the staff. By patronizing handlooms, in a way we are protecting our culture and tradition, he added.
