Hanamkonda: The State-level three-day senior inter-district men’s hockey tournament has got underway in the city on Friday.A grand inaugural ceremony was held at Vaagdevi College of Physical Education grounds at Bollikunta on the outskirts of the city on the day. Warangal MP P Dayakar, GWMC Mayor N Narender, Telangana Hockey Association president Kotha Amarender Reddy, general secretary N Mukesh Kumar and others attended the ceremony.

Speaking after launching tournament, Mayor Narender informed that as part of Smart City Mission, 25 acres of land has been earmarked in the city to develop infrastructure for promoting activities. Land for a hockey stadium would also be allotted in the city soon.

MP Dayakar addressing the gathering announced that he would extend financial assistance from his constituency development funds for promoting hockey in Warangal district. He lauded the efforts being made by Telangana Hockey in promoting the sport.
Rural youth has got immense talent and it needs to be explored and organising tournaments on regular basis would help to bring out such talents, the MP added.

Telangana Hockey Association office bearers Amarender Reddy and Mukesh Kumar explained the measures being taken up to promote the sport at grassroots level and to help players in rural areas to shine at national level. The tournament being organised in Warangal would help in that direction, they noted.

Telangana Hockey Warangal chapter president Ch Sudarshan Reddy, its secretary Syed Osman, Vaagdevi College administrative officer C Satyapal Reddy, Principal Moiz Ahmed, physical directors Venkateshwarlu and Sunil Reddy, the college PRO P Yellaiah and others were present.

It might be noted that nearly 180 players from across the State have been taking part in the tournament.
The tournament was being conducted with the support of Vaagdevi Group of Institutions. The college students presented colourful cultural programmes during the inaugural ceremony.
