Hanamkonda: The opposition against the State government’s proposal to permit private universities has been gaining momentum.Several student, employees and social organisations have been demanding the government to withdraw the decision. At a meeting held at Kakatiya University in Hanamkonda on Friday, KUCPS Employees Association president T Damodar and others strongly opposed private universities. In a similar manner, Lok Satta Udyama Samstha leaders have noted that allowing private universities in Telangana amounts to backtracking on the TRS’ election promise of offering free KG to PG education to all.

Setting up private universities would affect the higher education scenario in the State. Dalits, backward classes and minorities would be deprived of their reservations and thus lose their educational chances.

Kakatiya, Telangana, Mahatma Gandhi, Satavahana and Palamuru Universities were offering quality education to the students. The government should establish universities in each district in the state, they said. Rammohan Rao pointed out that only 25 acres of land would suffice to set up a private university while at least 100 acres of land is required if the university should be a centre of academic activity. Referring to the poor quality of education in private professional colleges, he said the same would likely be the case of private universities.The Udyama Samstha district president Jaganmohan Reddy, Vidyarthi Satta convener T Pavan and others were present.
