Luxettipet: Works on the proposed Talamala Irrigation project did not progress even an inch even seven months after Major Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao announcing it at Talamala in Jendavenkatapur in the mandal.

The people of the region aspired to have the irrigation project near the village as the topography of the region is perfectly suitable for the project with a vast tract of plain area surrounded by hillocks.

He gave the assurance while launching the mini tank bund works at Itikyala on May 16 last year. The farmers and people of the region, who waged relentless wars for the past 50 years in support of the project, were in despair when the minister made the announcement kindling their hopes on the project.

He gave an assurance to this effect at public meetings at Itikyala and Luxsettipet. Even seven to eight months after making the announcement there is no headway in the works.

Local legislator Diwakar Rao, who is saddled with rehabilitation of about 60 tribal families to be affected the project, did not even speak to the affected families.

Once the project is fully executed, it would have the capacity to store at least 3 tmc providing water for two crops in 30000 acres in Hazipur mandal and surrounding villages.

The proposed project site is surrounded by hills on three sides and way on the fourth side for the water to flow. Donabanda stream water reaches the project site during rainy season.

The proposed project should be linked with Kadem main canal to store at least three tmc of water all through the year.

A few distance away from the proposed site there is Gudem lift canal. The water from it can be diverted into the proposed project during the monsoon season.

Farmers of Hazipur and its adjoining areas have been demanding Harish Rao, who is on a tour of Dandepalli mandal, to visit the project site and issue orders to launch the works.

District Jala Sadhana Samiti convener Nainala Goverdhan said that the issue was taken to the government’s notice on many times and expressed wonder at the minister’s assurances being ignored by officials.

It was high-time the officials and rulers of the state woke up from their deep slumber and launched the project works.
