The team has visited Dameravai Megalithic structures, Mallur Temple, Pandavula Guttalu, Mylaram caves and Ghanpur temples complex during their five-day tour, which concluded on Tuesday. The team has left for Hyderabad on Wednesday to submit their findings to the corporation chairman.
It might be noted that the TSTDC with the central assistance has planned to develop a ‘Tribal Eco-tourism Circuit’ connecting Mulugu-Gattamma Temple area, Laknavaram Lake, Medaram Gaddelu, Tadvai forest area, Dameravai Megalithic structures and Mallur Temple, Bogatha waterfalls.
The Centre has sanctioned Rs 84.40 crore under Swadeshi Darshan Scheme for the purpose.Sharing the details of their findings with The Hans India, the study tour local coordinator Aravind Arya Pakide said they have found remains of earthen pots at Mylaram caves which date back to pre-historic times.
The caves spread around 5.5 kilometres long and 20 feet deep. There are several natural stone formations like Shiva Lingam and others found inside the caves. Similarly thousands of dolmens (Megalithic burial sites) have been found spread in hundreds of acres of land on Mallur hillock.
Likewise there are about 140 Megalithic burial structures are spread in 110 acres of land in Dameravai forests in SS Tadvai mandal in the district. ‘Entire Godavari basin is rich with such Megalithic sites, intensive and expert study is needed to be taken to explore them,’ Aravind felt.
‘All the sites we visited have been photographed and video-graphed and we going to submit a report on them to the TSTDC for further action. We are going to urge the corporation and archaeological department to protect natural shape of the sites while developing them,’ he added.
He informed that recently, the director and principal investigator at Centre for Cyber Archaeology and Sustainability (CCAS), University of California, USA, Prof Thomas E Levy visited Dameravai megalithic burial structures.According to the US professor, the site is very unique and he is planning to conduct light detection and ranging (LiDAR) survey to explore the site. It is sad the people from faraway places are coming here to explore the history while the universities in the state have so far not taken up any such step, Aravind lamented.
Asha Poorna and K Venkat Goud who are the members of the team expressed pleasure being the part of the study tour. “The district is really a store house of rich heritage and urgent measures are required to make it an international tourist destination,” they added.
