Khammam: The Congress party leaders paid homage to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, on his 69th death anniversary here at Sanjeeva Reddy Bhavan in Khammam on Monday.

Congress party district unit president Aitham Sathyam along with other leaders paid rich floral tributes to the statue and the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi.

Speaking on the occasion, Aitham Sathyam said, “When every citizen of India celebrating the freedom of the country Nathuram Godse, a Hindu nationalist, killed Mahatma Gandhi on January 30, 1948.

To commemorate the great freedom fighter who united all the citizens of the country against the British, we observe January 30 as a 'Shaurya Divas' or Martyrs Day.”

“At present, the decedents of Godse are ruling the country. The decision of demonetisation affected the country’s economy and due to which many poor and middleclass are facing severe problems,” he alleged.

He called upon the partymen, irrespective of castes and religions, to live up to the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi which alone would save the country and the party.

On the occasion, the Congress leaders felicitated Vanajeevi Daripalli Ramaiah, the only man from the Khammam till date to be honoured with Padma Shri.

Aitham Sathyam said without expecting any returns, Ramaiah strived hard to protect the environment with firm determination by planting more than a crore saplings and stood an ideal to many people apart from making every native of Khammam proud.

District leaders B Somla Naik, V V Appa Rao, Vaddeboina Narasimha Rao, B G Tilak, Bandi Mani, Tajauddin, Chota Baba, Saidulu Naik, Banothu Raju, P Mallaiah and V Uday were present along with others.
