Defence squads mulled to nip crime at village-level: Suryapet
The district police that have been successfully using available technologies like CCTV cameras, WhatsApp etc., to trace the culprits involved in various crimes have decided to make people participate in tackling crimes in the district.

As part of it, district SP Parimala Nutan has come up with an idea of forming Village Defence Squads, in every village, with locals’ being part of it to prevent and control crimes in the villages.
As part of the programme, soon district police will organise a Gram Sabha in every village, where Village Defence Squad with suitable number of people will be formed.
What They Do
- Squad will check crime in villages
- Take up patrolling in nights
- Pass on information to cops on anti-social activities
- Maintain log of strangers visiting villages and submit data to police when needed
The respective village police will monitor the functioning of squads and guide them time to time. The selected squad members further split into small groups who will take up patrolling duties in the nights in batch-wise and day-wise.
The teams will also keep an eye on people visiting the village and maintain the data of strangers to submit it to the police whenever needed.
The squads apart from passing on information on anti-social activities will also alert police whenever any untoward incident takes place in their village.
Besides village security, the squad members also create awareness among the villagers about government welfare schemes. At the same time, village police will conduct classes and counseling sessions to squad members in order to work more enthusiastically.
Speaking to The Hans India, the SP informed that district police have taken many initiatives to tackle the anti-social elements, illegal transportation, history sheeters, old offenders and land grabbers.
In a process to make towns, colonies and villages safe, large number of CCTV cameras would be setup in all major towns to cover important centres, sensitive areas, commercial complexes, colonies and in and exit points of the towns. Whereas in villages, crimes would be prevented by Village Defence Squads, she added.
