Hanamkonda: Kakatiya University Contractual Lecturers Association (KUCTA) leaders, who have been protesting for the past few days seeking regularisation of lecturers’ services, have planned to intensify their agitation.

The association leaders have decided to launch indefinite relay hunger strike and to strike the work from Tuesday onwards in support of their demands. Since February 8, they have staged different protests like black badge protests, rallies, pen down and dharnas.

As there was no proper response from the State government towards the demands of the contractual lecturers, the contractual lecturers’ associations in different universities in the State decided to intensify the agitation, the KUCTA leaders said.

The association president Chirra Raju, general secretary Venkata Gopinath, honorary president S Karunakar, leaders L Sridhar, Bodige Satish Veena Raju, Sadu Rajesh, K Yakaiah and others said nearly 150 contractual faculty were working in the university for nearly 15 to 20 years with meagre wages.

The government should implement ‘Equal Pay for Equal Work’ rule till regularisation of their services was done. As per the UGC guidelines, the contractual lecturers should be paid Rs 55,000 salary per month on par with the regular assistant professors as they were taking classes and discharging other duties equally.

On Monday, a large group of contractual lecturers have gheraoed the university Vice-Chancellor chambers objecting the authorities’ decision to withdraw a recent order issued enhancing remuneration by allowing weightage in different slabs.

According to the association leaders, the university registrar has issued an order January 11 enhancing the wages based on a report by a committee constituted to study the issue of contractual lecturers.

But the authorities decided to roll back the decision following objections from an association of the university.

‘It is not proper on part of the authorities to act under pressure from other associations. They should judge the issue on the basis of merits of the demands we put forth and the work we have been doing”, the association leaders maintained adding “We haven’t received this month’s salary yet”.
