Warangal: Tension prevailed at Enumamula agricultural market in Warangal on Monday as the police thwarted Telugu Desam Party activists’ attempt to stage relay hunger strike seeking profitable price to farmers.

The district TDP has planned to stage three-day relay hunger strike beginning from Monday in support of their demand. As part of their plan, large numbers party leaders and workers gathered at the market.

However, the police have not allowed them to go ahead with the protest saying they don’t have permission and removed the tents erected by the protestors opposite the market’s main gate.

Irked at which the party leaders have squatted in front of the market main gate and started shouted slogans against the State government. The police asked the protesting TDP leaders to leave the spot but they continued their protest.

Then the police have arrested nearly 100 party workers and leaders like R Prakash Reddy, Vem Narender Reddy, Gandra Satyanarayana Rao, E Mallesham and others. They were taken to Mills Colony police station and released later.

Later on the day speaking to presspersons, the party senior leader Prakash Reddy alleged that the local police have denied permission to stage hunger strike coming under pressure from Marketing Minister T Harish Rao and other ruling party leaders.

‘When we first asked for permission on February 17, the local CI and ACP have responded positively, but later they changed their stand. Following which, we have met the Commissioner of Police on February 19 but he denied permission to stage protest,’ he explained.

The IAS and IPS officials should not to act under pressure from ruling party and respect the democratic rights of opposition parties. ‘TDP is a disciplined party and we enjoy public support,’ he noted. Hitting at the TRS government and Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, Prakash Reddy said separate Telangana was created for the benefit of four crore population in the State but not for the welfare of four members of the CM’s family.

He informed that on February 23, Telangana TDP state president L Ramana, working president A Revanth Reddy and others would visit the market to express solidarity to the farmers. The party demanded Rs 10, 000 per quintal mirchi and Rs 8,000 per quintal of red-gram.
