Nizamabad: TRS MLAs Bajireddy Govardhan and Beegala Ganesh Gupta ridiculed the TDP leaders for shedding crocodile tears over the plight of farmers.

Speaking to the media here on Tuesday, they said that the TDP leaders were playing a big joke on the farmers as their president and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, said that agriculture was a big waste and was indifferent to the plight of farmers when he was in power in the undivided State of Andhra Pradesh.

The Telugu Desam Party leaders were never bothered to provide remunerative prices to the farmers on their produce, they added.

The TRS leaders said that the State government was implementing several welfare programmes for the benefit of the farmers during the last two-and-a half years.

They said that all the rural areas in the State of Telangana were lush with greenery and fertile agricultural lands. They said that all the tanks and ponds in the State were overflowing with water and the problem of water scarcity has been solved. There was also a high yield on the crops, they added.

Ganesh Gupta said that the farmers were getting more than the minimum support price fixed for their produce and were making profits on groundnut, cotton, pulses, chillies and food grains. He said that marketing for the Kharif crop begins on October 1 every year and ends on September 30.

As the green gram came for yield early in August, the State government was able to hold negotiations with the Centre and fixed the minimum support price for the farmers. Bajireddy Govardhan said that when onion was not able to fetch minimum support price for the farmers, the State government stepped in and ensured that the farmers were not put to loss.

He said that when the cost of a kg of onion was just Rs 2 or Rs 3 in Mahbubnagar district, the government purchased a kg of onion for Rs 8 per kg. It purchased 440 quintals of onions for Rs 2.11 lakh directly from the farmers and as a result, 3,225 farmers were benefited, he added. He said that the farmers in the Telangana were better placed than their counterparts in Andhra Pradesh in making profits.

He said that the State government spent a total of Rs 24 crore for the welfare of the farmers. The farmers and the consumers were like two eyes of the State government and their welfare would be taken into consideration whenever welfare measures were taken.
