Utnoor: The State government with the aim of strengthening financial status of the unemployed tribals, established Pisci-culture under the aegis of Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) here in 1988.

The government spent lakhs of Rupees for the construction of water storage tanks, deep trenches, and separate rooms for accommodation and conducting classes for the trainees. But, all these efforts werer rendered useless with the negligence of the officials’ concerned.

As many as 300 people underwent training earlier when the officials paid attention. The ITDA used to provide subsidies to those who underwent training along with the required material for catching fish such as nets, boats, oars and bicycles.

But, now things have changed with the lack of supervision by the officials concerned. This in turn resulted in the decrease in the number of tribals cultivating fish. The government has put a halt to funds from the financial year 2014-15.

There are 15 fishermen cooperative societies for the members of the Scheduled Tribes. Each society comprises 20-30 members. These societies have been demanding the State government to revive the Pisciculture.

It is learnt that those who went training in cultivating fish through Pisciculture institute are still cultivating fish thereby making it their livelihood. The fishing communites alleged that ITDA was neglecting pisciculture in the State. They have appealed to the government to render a helping hand to the eligible unemployed.
