Khammam: Demanding the government to upgrade mini Anganwadi centres, Bhavani, a representative of Anganwadi Workers Association, said that the state government enhanced the salaries of Anganwadi workers due to the agitations they took up in the past.

Speaking at a meeting, held under the leadership of All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) leaders B J Climont and Shingu Narasimha Rao, at Nizampet of Khammam on Tuesday, she said government must also take necessary steps for providing retirement benefits along with pension for Anganwadi workers.

She demanded the government to upgrade mini Anganwadi centres to that of main Anganwadi centres apart from providing all basic facilities required and extending a similar pay.

AITUC district president B J Climont demanded the government to recognise Anganwadi teachers as third class and helpers as fourth class employees by paying them Rs18,000 as salary.

He also said they would continue their fight against the government along with Anganwadi workers until the government regularises their services.

Later, the Anganwadi workers cut a cake celebrating the hike in salaries. Representatives of Anganwadi Workers Association were present along with others.
