Hanamkonda: The State government is committed to economically strengthen the backward castes, Telangana BC Commission Chairman BS Ramulu said.

Reviewing the implementation of several welfare schemes meant for the backward castes at the Urban Collectorate here on Tuesday, he said the government has earmarked nearly Rs 12,000 crore to raise living standards of the BCs.

“The government wants to develop BCs, who forms more than 50 per cent of the State’s population, economically, politically and socially,” Ramulu said.

In an attempt to support the fishermen community, the government has decided to supply 35 crore fingerlings, he said, stating that it would generate an income of nearly Rs 4,000 crore for the community.

Likewise, the government is also hell-bent on rescuing the handloom weavers, Ramulu said, referring to the 60 lakh sari order placed by the government.

He said that efforts are on to provide skill development programmes to the youth in the age group of 25 to 30 years. Then the government will provide financial assistance to these youth to achieve self-sustenance.

Ramulu appealed to the officials and other stakeholders to strive hard to achieve the targets set by the government for the development of the BCs.

BC Commission vice-chairman Gangadhar Tilak, BC Welfare officers Md Nissar and Narsimah Swamy were among others present.
