Uncommon it surely is not, to have career bureaucrats penning their memoirs after superannuation and thereby providing glimpses about their official life and times to the world at large. Mohan Kanda, an IAS officer of the 1968 batch too has walked that familiar path with his book ' Trekking over pebbles - Life through a Hyderabadi's looking glass, released by the Vice President, Hamid Ansari in December 2016.
Indian bureaucracy, the steel frame of governance has been an enduring career option for youngsters over the decades. With its work environment and the perks of sustained exposure to the powers-that-be, it is not short of its glamour quotient either.
This may be true to a large extent but Kanda's book, a compilation of experiences spread over 34 different subjects is a reality check. It is a mirror to the times that have gone by, seen by a government official from a ringside position. Of course, not all of it is pleasant and acceptable, but this is the success of the book that Kanda has penned, so engagingly.
The simple, reader-friendly format of the book with a rich collection of visuals which shows the officer interacting with the who's who of national and international politics is bound to be an IAS aspirant's delight. The author has recalled many instances with many celebrities in the book, which only goes to showcase the relatively unknown facets of the VIPs.
From the late Sixties to the new millennium, India has evolved from a fledgling nation to one which has embraced modern technology and up-to-date management systems which have gone a long way in improving governance and administration.
Hence, Mohan Kanda, who has held pivotal positions, (retiring as Chief Secretary of the undivided state of Andhra Pradesh), right from his home state and travelling across to the top slots which came his way, has constantly been sought for his multi-level experience and domain expertise in functioning at the top echelons of bureaucracy.
This has given a very interesting range of anecdotes for him to narrate, which the readers will relish for sure. In all, a notable addition to the range of books which talk about official lives of men in high places, who have to work harder and empower themselves constantly to stay the course.
