Warangal: Women are playing a key role in adding momentum to rural economy, said Parkal MLA Ch Dharma Reddy.

More than 68 per cent works under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Schemes were being executed by women. Similarly, 80 to 90 per cent of agricultural work was being done by women, he said. Despite such valuable contribution, the women were not being treated equally with men, he noted.

The MLA along with Warangal MP P Dayakar addressed ‘a Mahila Chaitanya Sadassu’, organised by Sarvodaya Youth Organisation marking the International Women’s Day, at Sangem mandal headquarters on Monday.

Dharma Reddy further informed that nearly 13,000 Mahila Podupu Sanghalu in the district have been doing transactions worth Rs 13 crore every year. “Everyone should appreciate the role of women in running the families and their developmental activities outside,” he suggested.

MP Dayakar addressing the gathering noted that women were excelling in all fields, whether it was agricultural work or exploring the cosmos. Yet such achievements by women were marred by the fact that there has been a decrease of the female birth ratio in the country due to parents’ aversion to have girl child.

“It is high time that parents and the society should to give equal importance to girl child and women. Parents should ensure equal educational opportunities to girl children in their families to ensure a better future for them,” the MP said.

Sarvodaya Youth Organisation secretary Pallepadu Damodar informed that they have been conducting weeklong awareness programmes and games and sports for women marking International Women’s Day with the support from Karl Kübel Foundation (KKS) and German Federal Ministry for Economic and Development.

Explaining the theme of this year’s Women’s Day, he said the event was focused on ‘Be Bold for Change’. The women should break their silence over the injustice being meted out to them in different fields and come forward to safeguard their rights.

Meanwhile, Warangal Urban district administration has planned to organise a ‘Dream Run’ with 10,000 girl students and women on Wednesday. District Collector Amrapali Kata has appealed the women to actively take part in the run. An awareness meeting on women’s rights would also be held, she said.

Jangaon District Collector A Devasena has called upon the women in the district to dedicate themselves to achieve open defecation free (ODF) status to Jangaon town marking International Women’s Day. She wanted the women to organise ‘Swatchata Bathukamma’ celebrations on Wednesday.
