HMWSSB to use geographic censors to curb irregularities

The Hyderabad Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) has decided to use sophisticated Remote Sensing Technology and Geographic Information System (GIS) to curb illegal connections.

As part of this tech-savvy decision, the water board would identify unauthorised water connections and impose penalties on them. The water board would also fix metres in 16 Operations and Management (O&M) division to check the quantity and pressure of supply. This move would mop up Rs 80 crore to the water board.

In order to regularize illegal connections the water board, during August last year, had announced the Voluntary Disclosure Scheme (VDS).

Out of about two lakh illegal connections indentified only 26,000 customers regularised their connections. Due to which the HMWS&SB has not only leaked immense quantity of water but also lost revenue worth Rs 50 crore.

Against this backdrop, the water board officials have now decided to use advanced technologies to identify unauthorised constructions.

A senior HMWS&SB official told The Hans India that there are 9.2 lakh water connections in the city. Besides this, he informed that of the lakh illegal water connections identified, about 30,000 were commercial connections.

Explaining about the censors and GIS, the official said that censors would be fixed in every O&M division to check the flow of water (whether it is supplied to legal to illegal connections) and same would be monitored by a special team using GIS.

“After identifying illegal connections the board would also fix metres to all legal connections and check the quantity of water consumed by the customer,” he said and added, “There have been reports that several connections in areas including Jubilee Hills and Banjara Hills were consuming beyond the domestic limit (equal to commercial connection).”

The official said that the water board has asked private consultants to prepare a detailed project report and submit it at the earliest.
