Hanamkonda: Even as the ruling party leaders were euphoric over the State government budget tabled in the Assembly on Monday, leaders of Opposition parties remained skeptic over the government’s claims.

They described the budget as anti-people and failed to match the promises made by the ruling party. TDP leader R Prakash Reddy described the budget presented by Finance Minister E Rajender as jugglery of words and figures aimed at deceiving the people. Speaking to presspersons here Monday, he said the State, which financially surplus, was thrown into debt trap.

The Finance Ministers’ assertions on fiscal state of the Telangana State don’t match with realty. He miserably failed to explain the deficit of Rs 33,000 crore incurred last year. An amount of Rs 83,845 crore was borrowed during 1952 to 2013 by previous governments.

In just two and half years’ rule of the TRS, the State’s debt touched Rs 64,000 crore burdening the citizens. The government lacks resources and it would have to seek advances to execute Mission Kakatiya and Mission Bhagiratha, the yields of which were yet to be seen, Prakash Reddy pointed out.

He felt that the budget aims at helping the contractors but not the common people. CPI state secretariat member T Srinivasa Rao noted that though outstanding fee reimbursement dues were Rs 4,600 crore, only Rs 1,900 crores allocated. Contrary to the claims of making the State a seed hub, no measures were proposed in the budget.

Similarly the dues towards loan waiver were Rs 14,000 crores, but a pittance of Rs 4,000 crores allocated for the purpose, he said. No funds were allocated for the development of MGM Hospital, he complained.

BJP Warangal Urban district president Rao Padma alleged that that the government failed to come up with action plan and funds for ‘Free Kg to PG education’ programme. The same was the case with Arogyasri programme.

‘During the 1,000 days of TRS rule, not even 10 per cent of promises were delivered,’ she criticised. CPM district president S Vasudeva Reddy lamented that the funds allocated to double bedroom housing and three acre land to dalits were very meagre.

He suspected that welfare programme would be affected in view of the fact that there was a fiscal deficit of Rs 26, 000 crore. Electricity charges might increase as only Rs 4,000 crores were allocated to power sector, he added.
