A senior professor from department of Mathematics of Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru, Sundaram Thangavelu has been selected for Mathematician of the Year Award for the year 2016.

​Hanamkonda: A senior professor from department of Mathematics of Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru, Sundaram Thangavelu has been selected for Mathematician of the Year Award for the year 2016.

The award is presented by National Institute of Technology Warangal in association with a governmental charitable organisation, Ponnala Foundation of Hyderabad to honour persons with exceptional talent in the field of mathematics.

The Director of NIT, Warangal, G Rama Chandra Reddy addressing a press conference here on Monday said the award presentation ceremony will be held on March 15 (Wednesday) at the institute at 10.30 am. Ponnala Foundation founder Ponnala Rama Krishna, members EV Srinivas Rao and Bathini Srinivas Rao were also present during the press meet.

Supreme Court judge Jasti Chelameshwar will present the award to Thangevelu. Consulate General of India, Toronto Prof Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad and founder and executive chairman of Cyient BVR Mohan Reddy will be the guests at the ceremony, he said.

The Director further said mathematics is a vast area, whose exploration chances are plenty and the subject is at the core of human existence. The Indians are gifted with exceptional mathematical skills and they can fulfil need of 15 million mathematicians the world needs in the years to come.

The foundation founder Rama Krishna said a committee of eminent members have chosen the awardee. Being an alumnus of Princeton University Prof Thangavelu specialised in harmonic analysis and won Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar prize in 2002, the highest science award in India for the mathematical science category, he said.
