Warangal: With March 15 being celebrated as World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD) across the globe as solidarity to the consumer movement, there is a need for effective consumer education measures, consumer rights activists suggests.

Every year it has become a routine to celebrate the event but nothing significant is being done towards protection of a consumer, felt the vice president of State Federation of Consumers Councils P Damodar.

He stressed on the importance of implementing consumer protection laws in an effective manner, besides educating the consumers. Though the Consumer Protection Act enacted in 1986, full potential of its implementation it yet to be achieved, he said.

Besides the government’s role in protecting the rights of consumers, it is also the duty of every individual consumer to act when his or her rights are violated. Many a times people tend to be reluctant in registering a complaint when they suffer loss, he noted.

According to Centre for Consumer Studies during the month of January 2017 very few from Telangana have approached National Consumer Helpline seeking redress. Of the all the complaints it received during the month a mere 1.98 per cent complaints are from Telangana.

Similarly during the year 2015-16 only 0.80 per cent of the total complaints are from Telangana. The figures indicate that there is a need for the government to educate the consumers over their rights, Damodar opined speaking to The Hans India on Tuesday.

An effective mechanism should be set up to analyse problems and suggesting solutions to industry, government, regulators, policy-makers and the public for inputs in policy, rules, and regulations according to the changing requirement of consumers, Damodar suggested.

In view of globalisation unwanted products are being dumped into market and forcing the customers to purchase them. Consumers should visit http://www.nationalconsumerhelpline.in and lodge complaint or contact local consumer council to get their problem solved when they felt deceived by companies or traders.

The consumers could even make complaints when they found the services by fair price shops are not satisfactory. They could contact the district civil supplies officer or contact concerned RDO on the cases related to ration cards, he added.
