Kothagudem: As against the requirement of 6.55 lakh textbooks in Kothagudem district, which is entirely an agency area with predominant poor population, only 4.5 lakh books have been received by the Education department officials, who distributed them to government schools.

With over two lakh textbooks in various subjects yet to reach students, there is no clarity on how and when students would receive books with the new academic year set to start from Tuesday. There are around 1,66,580 students attending 1,613 schools, both government and private, in the district.

With no textbooks, how the teachers would perform their duties once the academic year starts remains a million dollar question.

Lack of qualified teachers, basic facilities and necessary infrastructure are further compounding the problems at these government schools.

Ignoring all these, the district is gearing up to organise mass ‘Aksharaabhyasam’ in schools on March 24, across all mandals as per the government orders. The next day, the officials are planning to conduct programmes to promote enrolling in government schools with cooperation from local representatives and parents.

At the same time, theatre groups are to hold programmes on importance of education, teaching methodology in government institutions and facilities provided.

An exercise is on to identify those students of 2016-17 who were lagging behind in various subjects and to coach them. This will continue till April 22. The aim of the exercise is to make students perform better, said officials. The Badi Bata programme will be launched from April 3 to 13.

Speaking to The Hans India, AISF leader Raju pointed out that most of the government schools are in sorry state of affairs with lack of basic facilities like drinking water, no electric lights and sheds for mid-day meal scheme. They don’t have latrines and compound walls, and no mention of funds for providing these facilities has been made so far, he said.

Added to these problems is the vacant post of teachers. There is no clarity on how these posts are to be filled, observed Raju.

However, District Education Officer Hayagreevachary informed this newspaper that all steps would be taken to ensure the academic year takes off smoothly. He said already textbooks moved here have been dispatched to various schools. Orders have been issued to teachers on the mass Aksharaabhyasam.

The DEO expressed confidence of receiving funds for improving the basic facilities in schools.
