Khammam: With mercury levels on the rise, the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) demanded the government to conduct half day classes in the Anganwadi centres. Speaking at a meeting held with the representatives of Anganwadi Association of Khammam Urban unit on Tuesday, AITUC district general secretary Shingu Narasimha Rao said enhancing the salaries of Anganwadi workers was good news.

However, just to call Anganwadi workers as teachers was not enough, the salaries also must be given on par with teachers, he said. “The government issued orders to conduct half-day classes in government-run schools, but why it has not given similar orders to Anganwadi centres where kids below six years of age are taught?” he questioned, demanding the government to immediately issue the orders for conducting half day classes.

Several AITUC members and representatives of the Anganwadi Association attended the meeting.
